Dental Emergency
Toothache:
Abscesses on the gum as a result of severe caries of the adjacent teeth.
- If you child has a toothache, rinse the mouth, brush and floss the area of the affected tooth thoroughly to dislodge impacted food debris.
- Check around the affected area to see if there is any redness, swelling or abscess. If the face is swollen, apply cold compress.
- Do NOT place aspirin or oral gel around the gum or on the aching tooth.
- Contact your dentist immediately to schedule an emergency appointment.
Trauma:
Injuries to the baby teeth:
- Clean the area of injuries with warm water.
- Ensure no foreign material is impacted on lips and cheeks.
- Contact your dentist for an emergency appointment immediately.
Chipped tooth:
- Rinse mouth with warm water to remove dirt and other debris from the area of the broken tooth.
- Apply cold compress to the lip and face in the area of injured tooth to control swelling.
- Make an attempt to find and save tooth fragments.
- Contact your dentist for an emergency appointment immediately
Knock out permanent teeth:
- Stay calm
- Find the tooth. Hold the tooth by the crown and rinse the tooth. Do not touch the root part of the tooth and do not brush or scrub the tooth. You may damage the cells that are required to revitalize the tooth.
- If it is possible, try to insert the tooth back into the socket.
- If it is not possible, store the tooth in “Save a tooth” solution or “milk”.
- Go to your dentist immediately.
